ATF Issues New Rule on Pistol Braces

Posted July 28, 2025 · By Vantage Defense Editorial

⚠️ URGENT LEGAL UPDATE: The ATF has officially reclassified many AR-style pistols with braces as NFA-regulated short-barreled rifles. Owners may be required to register under the NFA or remove the brace. Compliance deadline: August 15, 2025.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced a final ruling this week that significantly changes the classification of AR pistols equipped with stabilizing braces. This update follows years of debate and confusion around the brace category.

Key Details

Effective immediately, most braced pistols fall under SBR (Short Barrel Rifle) status under the National Firearms Act. This may subject current owners to a $200 tax stamp, enhanced background checks, and additional restrictions.

ATF guidance suggests current owners may apply for a temporary amnesty registration, though final implementation varies by state. We recommend contacting legal counsel or your state firearms association for assistance.

What You Can Do Now

  • ✔️ Remove or modify the brace before the deadline
  • ✔️ File a Form 1 for SBR conversion if applicable
  • ✔️ Contact your state reps to oppose this reinterpretation
